Montplier, Vt isn't all that far from me (about 145 miles north). Big difference in January temps (10°F for high; 7°F for lows); for the mean it decreases 1°F for every 19 miles north or 1°C every 57 km.

That's a much bigger difference than what I'm used to - why such an abrupt cooldown in quite a small distance?

Not really sure; it's much more in winter than the rest of the year. It might have something to do with a shift in usual air masses; especially since you closer to ocean influence when you go south.

The UK looks like it has a bigger north-south summer temperature difference than winter

I did not even need to look at the stats to know the French one.

Vermont, no contest. Lovely four season climate with autumn colour and cold snowy winters. Actually, those stats are pretty much ideal for me.

France, mostly due to the slightly cooler summers. Though I'd prefer colder winters, but maybe not quite as cold as Vermont. Actually, I'd be fine with the Vermont winter temps if the summer high rarely topped 65.

Edit: Grr! I was looking at the wrong temperatures for France! It's definitely too warm for me. If anyone is about to vote for France, choose Vermont instead to cancel out my vote.
