1988 was hot and in the Midwest we did have an exceptional amount of 100+ days, however, nationally, the number of 100+ days must have been lower elsewhere according the bar graph above. Still in the top 10 though. Like 1980 was nothing special here in the Midwest, but there must have been a lot of century mark readings in the south and south west that year.
They're saying it might an El Nino winter, so a winter like 2009-2010 might happen again (bad news for you in Chicago, great news for me in Tallahassee ) but we'll see. If that's the case then a fast spring warm up will probably occur....like in 2010.

Wait not so fast.... 2009-2010 was very snowy here and pretty cold (though not frigid) thanks to a persistent negative AO
It was the 7th snowiest winter on record. I wouldn't complain if we got over 52 inches of snow this winter
Btw, the winter of 73/74' we had 54 inches of snow, ranked 6th one ahead of 09/10'.
Sorry, I guess I was thinking more of March 2010 for some reason , but a winter like 2009/2010 wouldn't be bad
1973/1974 looks terrible for me
09/10 was an awesome winter! Tallahassee came close to snow - parts of the panhandle saw up to 2 inches of snow I think. 73/74 only gave me 1.6" of snow, so I'll pass on that too!
