You rarely hear people in Australia quote 1981-2010 climate data when referring to various weather records, the total history of the station is normally referenced. I don't see why Melbourne should be any different.

Because Melbourne never records summers as goddamn cold as what is shown in the out of date bullcrap averages as shown on Wikipedia. Not only that, but sunshine hours are severely out of whack and are clearly made up. Melbourne averages 2370 hours of sun a year, not 2031! Parts of SW Tassie might, but not Melbourne!
The USA uses 1981-2010 averages, (note the wiki articles for their cities, almost all are 1981-2010), maybe because they have sense and are relevant to modern day climate. But what do I know, I don't live in Perfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff, land of endless friggin sunshine and heat.... and 30 years behind the civilised half of Australia. Heck, it takes 30 years just to fly there

Lol, you complain so much about Melbourne's cloudiness and cold that I would have thought those values to be more accurate
The numbers shown on Wikipedia actually are very similar to the 1981-2010 stats for most of the official weather stations in the Melbourne area. The only exception is the inner city site which has significantly warmer temps because of the urban heat island.
Also, the 2370 hours of sun Flight Simmer mentioned earlier is from Melbourne Airport for the years 1999-2012, which is on the dryer northwestern side of Melbourne (500-550mm annual rainfall) so most of Melbourne is probably cloudier than this.
Data from 1932 - 1967 taken at the RO site then 1967 - 1999 Laverton before shifting to the current (airport) site.
The averages quoted from BOM covers the period from 1955 to 1967 only, which is hardly a good representive, and does not cover the standard 30-year average as set out by the WMO.
Re rainfall, my best mate lives in Glen Waverley - in the east - and upon looking at rainfall statistics for that suburb, the mean rainfall averages more than 850mm per annum.
It is just a pity that sunshine is not recorded there, as I am sure the hours are lower than at the airport.
Wikipedia is such an unreliable source for climate data, at least for Australia, but I've seen dodgy data for places in other countries as well. It always annoys me when they use a site with only 10 years of records (like Brisbane) or just make up numbers (sunshine hours for a lot of places).
In case anyone does not know, the official source for Australian climate data can be found here: Climate Data Online
Which is exactly why I don't bother with Wiki at all.
I have better things to do than try and listen to a fly fart on the wall
