Some say that in areas around Tower with slightly different microclimates the temperature may have been even lower. Unlike in Duluth, where -40° is extremely rare, temps in the -40s are every-winter occurrences in Tower, often occurring several times in a single winter. Even -50's aren't that amazingly rare there.

Traveled through the Arrowhead in 2006 and 10 years afterward they were still talking about it. Because I was curious, I did a search and found the little community of Embarrass saw the thermometer hit -64. I would be embarrassed, too! There isn't an official weather station in Embarrass so that awesome reading didn't get into the books but note that Fairbanks's (AK) coldest ever was only 2 degrees worse.

melbourne - high 114 (45.6ºC), low 27 (-2.8ºC)
Incidentally the record high was recorded 70 years ago. You'd think that we'd get close to it these days but noooooo....

SAB, I didn't realize that you don't really have winter there. If your low is 27, you must barely get down to freezing during most winters. Is that correct?

Corvallis, OR
Highest 108 on 8/10/1981; lowest -14 on 12/12/1919, Official records dating back to 1890.
UNofficially......~110 also on 8/10/1981; lowest ~0 in February 1989 (don't have an exact date). Measured from my house with a reasonably accurate thermometer.

That's true. I can't ever remember seeing it drop below freezing in downtown during my 17 years here. Outer suburbs may see 1 or 2 nights below freezing each year but the city doesn't. The lowest it usually gets in the city is about 35.
We do have winter, with February, June and July the worst months. Ofcourse to you it would be paradise but for me its sneezing, nose blowing and depression. March and sometimes even April are warmer than February. Although this year I'm not so sure if well get any warmth again.
