If they ever get some of these sorted, I have a dozen or more cases left to hammer them with.
I tried to impress upon a councillor (I was there on other business) recently, just how dire the situation could potentially be. At first they thought it was just a bit of a joke, but once they got the point about the new records being recognised by NIWA, and therefore official, the smiles quickly disappeared.

The problem is that NIWA cannot or will not allocate resources to something considered to be of limited scientific importance (convenient, when an organisation is not a "service" but a profit-maker and runs "lean"). One thing for sure, though - I am not aware of any other evidence whatsoever that supports Whakatane's claim - in the real world, 45+ years of comparative data using the same type of instruments gave it just 2 "wins" in that time, with one to the Tekapo region and the rest to Blenheim, Nelson or Motueka.

A splendid 0.4 hours for the first 5 days of February.
At this rate, I wouldn't mind spending a few days in Reykjavik to get some sunshine.

Nice, France; capital of the French Riviera and theoretically one of the sunniest cities in Europe

What's the "official" mean for Toulon? I seem to remember a number around the 2900 mark?

I can't find data on Météo France, but some unofficial sources have it at 2899 hours.

Nice's mean is 2724.

A derp grand total of 11.6 hours to the 8th.

It was mostly sunny today, so it should bump it to about 18-20 hours.

The cloudiest ever February here recorded 95 hours so we have a SERIOUS shot at beating it considering that almost 1/3rd of the month is over and we're at less than 20 hours.
