My Dad lives in the SE and sent an E-mail with a photo of the hot weather and said it was 29 degrees there back then, god knows what it is now, lucky bugger!

Mostly cloudy and 70 F at 10AM. Weather should be good this weekend with highs in the upper 70s to around 80 F and it might drop down to 50 F tonight.

The sun has just made a very late appearance here today, came out about 4.00PM. Far too late to get any warmth, but it got up to a neutral 70°F / 21°C, still, about 10 degrees colder than the "scorching" South East.

Well the past two years the Scorching SE may aswell be broken off and attached to the continent because from what I can see they get more continental weather than the weather that we get in the rest of the BI. The weather there is always always completely different there to here by about 10c which is just amazing for the size of the British isles. Even in the Winter.

Only in 2010 was there a heatwave that only the SE 'enjoyed'. All other recent 'heatwaves' were at least for all of England and Wales.

The SE quadrant of the UK has certainly been under a more continental influence than elsewhere.. which would explain why Kent was the coldest place in the UK last winter, and why -16C was recorded in parts of E Anglia, while Scotland was very mild.

Well hopefully this winter is a reverse to last and the SE is the warmest like it should be as a result of a Greenland block. Continental winters are no good to the UK because we are too far west. There have only been a few successful continental winters in the past few 100 years. Our best winters are from Greenland highs.

Plus with Continental winters we don't really get that much snow because its too dry.

Last August I remember parts of the SE reaching 30°C and it was low 20's here, normally the difference in avg. high is only about 4°C in summer (18°C here, 22°C in the SE). August 2009 was another month with an obvious NW/SE split, quite a hot month in the SE and rather tepid here with some near-10°C differences in high temps quite regularly.

Well, there was the obvious 2 day spell of heat when it reached 30C in northern England, back end of June. Usually there's at least a spell of heat for England & Wales and not only the SE.

And, of course, late June early July 2009 provided a lengthy spell of heat.

Most of the past hot spells do result in a NW/SE split. Recently anyway, recently being past 5 years.
