Nice recap with video and graphics in link... Video goes into how Winter started off with storms tracking in the north then pushed south because the ridge popped so far north in the West. Shows an animation of snowpack across the U.S. Short video.
I'm going to try something new... Re-live the moments day by day for the historic October snowstorm...
4 yrs ago today...it was hard to buy the October snowstorm model solutions.. Here are the EURO, NOGAPS, GFS, JMA from 10/25/11.
Continuing.... 4 Yrs Ago today overnight models shifted east a tad with 10/29/11 storm bringing heavier (historic) snows towards the coast. Here's the GFS
Here was the NAM & Euro model 48hrs out for the historic 10/29/11 snowstorm
So we were 2 days away facing disaster with green leaves still on the trees. It was truly hard to fatham what the models were showing. Something we never experienced before. 850mb line off the coast in October with a big coastal storm
And here we are... 4 years ago today... Couldn't believe it was happening... It was snow right from the start while models and forecasters thought it would be rain to snow.
1 inch .... Ohhh this is beautiful!
2 inches ... there's more coming?
3 inches.... branches started popping
4 inches ..... transformers humming I was seeing blue flashes
5 inches ..... power goes out, trees snapping everywhere, sounds of sirens, transformers blowing up.
I knew if I was seeing this here, it was even worse north of me.
6 inches ... just in awe but I saw the radar and it was going to let up here. Meanwhile power companies continued to get calls all over the state for power outages..
Most of CT was powerless. Crews from Canada and other states came in to help out. Wires, transformers and Poles had to be replaced.
My famous shot from the day after in Danbury. says it all. Imagine needing to strand your car in October because it was snowing so bad and trees and power lines were coming down. Plus all this snow still left with sunny skies the next day
