I would like this thread to gather in one place every possible weather records, like some kind of Weather Guinness Book of Records. It should be much more comprehensive than just the very well known facts such as warmest temperature ever recorded and so on, but also include more detailed stuff including what we have been researching and debating (lowest latitude with a frost, most northern XXX-type of climate, biggest temp swing in one day, hottest country, country with warmest record lows, etc. pretty much ANYTHING you judge interesting.) The aim is to get a list we could later save as a pdf or something. The thread should hence be updated frequently; everyone is welcome to participate and add categories. I am not home yet so I won't start typing the first categories right now but I'll contribute very soon!

Let's start with some basic stuff:

Warmest temperature ever recorded (officially): 57.8°C Aziziya, Libya on Sept 13, 1922 (controversial)
Warmest temperature reliably recorded: 56.7°C Death Valley, CA in 1913
Hottest place on average (summer highs): 46.9°C in July, Death Valley CA
Hottest place on average (year round): 34.4°C Dallol, Ethiopia

More to come soon

Under the realm of "interesting weather" here's something I found:

UC Santa Barbara Geography / News & Events / Department News

This details a short-term heat wave that hit Santa Barbara in June of 1859 and like the problematic 134 (56+) registered in Death Valley in 1913, is apocraphyl. Something of this nature did hit the coast then and it was very unpleasant for those living there at the time but the temperature extremes and the reported damage resulting from the heat blast have never been thoroughly vetted.

If further investigation reveals this to be authenthic; to be really real, then the small coastal California village of Goleta has the odd distinction of having the highest verified temperature ever recorded on the North American continent.

How about strongest surface wind on earth?

It used to be Mt. Washington NH (USA) with a gust of 234-mph. Now they say it was the 1999 Moore/Bridgecreek F5 Tornado with 286 mph...and some say it was Hurricane tip in the Western Pacific with 250-mph wind gusts off Guam (based on pressure estimates).

The lowest sea leavel pressue is still Typhoon Tip (1979) I think - 879 mb and Hurricane Wilma in the Gulf of Mexico is close 2nd with 882 mb. Lowest pressure on land on the USA mainland is still 892 mb (26.35 inches) in the middle Florida Keys durning the Great 1935 Florida Keys Hurricane.

Warmest reliably recorded temperature is 129°F - 53.9°C (not exact because the US weather service rounds to the nearest °F ) multiple times in Death Valley. The 56.7°C is disputable, thermometer placed too low, with a series of very readings for several weeks never recorded since — yet other California desert stations weren't reading particularly high values.

Yup, that definitely belongs here! Which wind reading do you think we should use then?
