Very windy outside with gusts of up to 117 km/h recorded in the Perth area. The atmospheric pressure is also very low at 995.8 hpa and decreasing, wouldn't be surprised if that is a record low for November.

High of 17 C instead of the forecasted 20 C and near-overcast dawn 'till dusk. Plus we had that icy cold easterly blowing a gale all day long. If anyone wants to simulate what Christchurch's climate is like put a leaf blower in the freezer and stand in front of it. That's what the easterly feels like.

More crap ahead. Heavy rain and hail tomorrow then a forecast high of 12 C on Fri.

Grrr! Just read NIWA's seasonal climate outlook for Dec - Feb and it seems almost certain that we'll skip summer for the second year in a row. Looks like the same crap as last year with odds overwhelmingly in favour of much cooler than normal conditions.

The report gives your area a 20-40-40 split - ironically your "above" part is higher than most other regions' - if not the highest. However the general situation is quite different from last year's and the prognosis partly depends on cool SSTs around NZ persisting. This is certainly not guaranteed.

For myself I'm happy with this month although the record will show it as close to 1C below average, the minima being the main reason. Sunshine will be comfortably above average for the 3rd month in a row, and best of all, rainfall not even half the average, a promising-looking trend there, and well overdue considering the last 3-4 years in particular. Windspeeds also down on average.

But there seems to be a positive SST anomaly around the central East Coast:

Christchurch seems all but guaranteed to have its fifth coldest November on record with both max and min temps 2 C below average. It has been somewhat drier and sunnier than average but not by a great margin and it hardly compensates for the exceptionally cold temps in any case.

But it's not very significant in the context of the larger zone. Presumably the outlook assumes an extra SW flow will stop a rise happening too soon. I wouldn't venture an opinion until another month has passed. In the admittedly highly anomalous 1997-98 season the SSTs rose quite rapidly.

Depends on your priorities. For me the latter two are much more important than the temperatures. The current Climate Explorer maps suggest the Ch'ch anomalies are a little under 2C.

Record breaking heat over northwest Victoria today, with Mildura up to 44.7C/112.5F and still rising. The old record at Mildura Airport was 44.5C. The Post Office had a record of 45C which will probably be beaten soon as well. The combined records of these weather stations go back to 1889.

Edit: Just to clarify, that's only the record for November.

Very hot in Melbourne today. Currently 38.2C. Glad I'm not in the northwest of the state as george960 mentioned.
Looks like a few towns will be setting new November records

Record was beaten by a town just south of Mildura:

Weather News - Hottest spring day on record

There is an outside chance that the NSW November record of 46.8C may be beaten in the next couple of days as well, particularly by notorious hot spots like Wilcannia:
Wilcannia weather - local weather forecast

By Saturday there will have been 7 days in a row over 40C in Wilcannia, still a long way short of the brutal February 2004 heat wave where it recorded 16 days in a row over 40C - and all schools were shut for over 2 weeks out there.

Looks like some much needed rain overnight and tomorrow. The last few days have been very nice, with temps at work around 25C/77F. There is a forecast high of only 17C/63F for tomorrow, and even a possibility of frost tomorrow night. The cold should only last a day or so though.

Might be able to crack the 300 hour mark for sun this month, with 295 hours ending today. It all depends on the next 2 days.

Some very funky clouds about today.
