There were lots of gold mining towns in that region (and most of the South Island ), dating back from the 1860s onwards. The dry climate in that region has meant that a lot of ruins still remain. They seem to be mostly stacked schist with mud plaster over top or rammed earth bricks with mud plaster. The last photo shows walls made from rocks, for sheep, although it's not a good area for that type of farming.

we ve had very sunny couple of months, despite the swing in temps (yay) im thinking this february was much sunnier than last one, and less rainy, imo.
