Guilin gets 2~3 snow days per year, on average.

That's amazing for a place that's at the same latitude as Miami!

Indeed. It's farther inland than Miami, and at slightly higher altitude. Of course, it's still impressive, since inland or not makes little difference at that latitude (think the Rio Grande valley), and 500 feet makes little difference in terms of weather.

I've found that it makes more of a difference than you might think, but not nearly enough to turn Miami into a climate that gets 3 snow days. Still, I've found on road trips that as little as 40 feet of elevation can mark the difference between areas of fall color and uniform bareness, and I've occasionally seen 50 feet of elevation making the difference between rain and snow in those 37F/mix of rain and snow type of affairs. That's why I usually try to locate myself in a neighborhood that's higher in elevation than the rest of the town. Getting up as little as 50 feet can make a difference if you want snow, and locating on a hill also has a bonus benefit of usually being outside of flood zones.

It's quite disappointing to see how warm Europe is compared to similar latitudes in Canada. Damn Gulf stream. But then Eurasia compensates for that in Russia where cold extends much further south than anywhere else.

Harbin got -28 C, also earlier than average.

It may be a cold winter.
Its cold but it isn't really that early. I think we may have reached colder than that by now in December 2010.

Well, Scandinavia looks about similar to Canada according to that map.

I don't really mind as long as I get snow and a few Ice days, but then I expect no more than that.

Only the parts of Canada that look like Scandinavia are 10 degrees in latitude further south .
