Maybe it's because there is a more stark divide in the US, whereas here, most cities would probably fall in the liberal category, maybe all of them would.

I wouldn't worry about it being too conservative politically. You might not like the cold, though. I believe NYC gets more snow than Chicago, but when Chicago is snowless it's still typically cold.

Boston does have a higher cost of living though, so I'll say it again, Denver is pretty much exactly what you're looking for. Look into it.
