Vote for the story that would generate the most response on fb and twitter from Angelenos who are used to blue skies and sunny skies all the time?

A) Los Angeles gets a 5.8 earthquake.

B) Los Angeles gets a light rain shower in July (it has NEVER rained in July in Los Angeles).

C) Los Angeles wakes up to an overnight low of 32 degrees- no snow- under clear skies.

D) Los Angeles goes A FULL YEAR (365 days) without seeing a single drop of rain- ZERO- not even drizzle.

For news sake I guess it would be A. As mostly people care about the weather.

But could be D as that could spark fires which would be a bigger news than all the options.

As a native Californian, a 5.8 earthquake is not scary at all to me....it's kinda fun......it has to be 7.0 or bigger to actually scare me.

I voted for "B" cuz it would get the most attention when it happened. People can plan on outdoor events all summer long because it literally never rains from mid May through mid September. Rain has been recorded in both June and August but never in July.

"C" would also get people's attention and make major news in Los Angeles but it would have to have SNOW at sea level in order to trump both B and D IMO. An dry overnight freeze would make headlines and prompt tons of social media responses though.

"D" also has never happened but people don't pay attention to things that happen over a years time slowly- it would just be like a continuation of an average "normally totally dry summer" for a full year and wouldn't affect people's lives at all.

Actually- I think all four stories probably are pretty close as the 5.8 would freak the hell out of the newbies in L.A.

Many parts of LA already get into the 30sF at night in winter, especially places like the Valley other inland areas. I don't think C would get any major coverage. The earthquake might, and so would the July rains, but I think a whole year of no rain would receive bigger coverage.

I actually started wondering.......Is a whole year of zero rain (including an entire winter which is the only season that usually guarantees at least some rain) reasonably scientifically possible? Meaning could it be a 1 in 500 year event or more likely than that even. Or is it as hypothetical as snow in Singapore?

In any case, I don't think most Angelenos would be directly affected by no rain for a year as they are used to zero rain for 4-6 months every year, so while the news would cover it a lot, the other 3 stories would generate more social media postings.

WDYT?

Can't quite be "never" for July rain - NOAA tables cite an average of 0.03" for airport and 0.01" for the city office.

Quite true, both San Diego and parts of the suburbs of LA plunged into the upper 20's F this past winter and it barley made the national news. Despite the myth, it gets cold in the winter in places like LA in winter at night - it ant the tropics that for sure

Yes, Wave, I remember that. My young Giant White Bird-of-Paradise died from the frost. The coast was warmer, of course, but those inland areas had wind chills of 19*!!!

I recall a few drops in July 2010. ZERO rain in July is a stretch.
