Miami easily. Arica is too cool. And, how would you say Arica doesn't get cold snaps, but then turn around and say Miami does in your next paragraph. Very contradictory. Miami proper doesn't see less than 45 F throughout the year, and averages 60+ night temps in the coolest month of the year. Miami has warm winters. Arica has cool winters. In Miami you're guaranteed at least 20 days of beach weather in the coolest month. In Arica you're not. Miami is a much better climate. There's no debate. You guys try and over dramatize Miami cold snaps at times. For goodness sakes its only < 3 days a year! Miami is not cool at all IMO. We can even use the cool nights at times. Miami is a perfect climate.
well it depends on the winter we've had winters like in 2010 the brought freezing temps with frost in the suburbs for a week non stop and had day time highs in the upper 40s!!! that whole winter we were plagued by cold snaps in fact it was so cold that we had frost as late as march!! I never want to have another winter like that again.
I voted for Miami, it has more sun hours than Arica despite having much higher precip levels. I only wish Miami got less summer precip and more winter precip, but even in the summer it is almost always sunny in the morning and thunderstorms happen around 1-2 hours each day in the afternoon. Evenings are usually cleared out by then. Fall, winter, and spring are sublime and so it's not a bad climate.
The temps in Arica are very nice, but the low clouds and fog would be depressing as would the stark desert landscape. If it's going to be that dry, at least give me some heat so I can go into the Pacific Ocean. I much prefer a city like Chiclayo, Peru over Arica, Chile. Nice hot dry summer temps and a milder Pacific Ocean but with large waves perfect for surfing.
It's certainly hotter - being considerably further north - but the following shows it is just as cloudy (not that Arica's 2300 hrs is really a low total), and furthermore it is cloudiest when it's hottest. Arica is sunniest in the warmest part of the year and the solar radiation should not be underestimated, either. When I was there in an April sunlight still felt very strong, and occurrences of thin low cloud seemed to little or no effect on the total radiation. Thos was even more notable at Antofagasta, where uber-thin patches of cloud seem to have no effect at all at that time of year.
Who cares if 3-4 dats a year dips below 50°F. It is amazing! 3-4 using a jacket is even interesting, and brings a more special way to see Miami’s climate. I live in St. Pete Beach in Central Florida, and I say to start to complain of cold start here not in Miami!
relentless sun and dryness is my nightmare, so Miami wins.
