Where I live in the SF Bay Area, summer temperatures vary GREATLY depending on how far you are away from the coast. It can be 55F, foggy, and windy (20 mph) on the beach (making it feel more like 45F) and 95 F, sunny, and blazing hot with calm winds (extremely low humidity) only 40 miles inland. Even 5 miles can make a big difference as it can be 57 F on the beach and 67 F in downtown San Francisco. SF is known for their cool, foggy summers but the problem is the climatic readings are taken from downtown which is not on the immediate coast. That skews the extent to how cool the beach can be in summer.
For this climate battle, I choose the town of Half Moon Bay, which probably the coolest summers in the entire Bay Area. Average daytime highs straddle around 60 degrees year round with the summer actually being the coolest feeling time of the year due to constant fog. Falls feel the warmest as the fog lifts and in winter and spring can be sunny and pleasant when it's not raining. The all time record high for July is only 84 degrees (the all time record high for every month except for Dec, Jan, and Feb are actually HIGHER than the all time record high for July). Most of the rain falls in winter and spring and there is very little rain from weather systems in summer but the constant fog drip keeps things green year round. Contrast that with Livermore, CA which is only 40 miles inland but experiencing FAR warmer summers with average highs of 89 degrees in July and records in the 110 degree range for the summer months. Nights still cool down very nicely with average lows in the 50s. Summers are BONE DRY with low humidity and ZERO moisture of any sort. Moderate rainfall in winter and the hills are green from December through early May and then turn brown until November at least. Winters are also slightly colder than Half Moon Bay with night time lows below freezing happening an average of 10 times a year (on clear nights) but the contrast is FAR greater in summer. Livermore because of the seasonal variation. I have tons of family in the bay area (including Livermore) and have been there several times. And in the summer, as you said, the immediate coast can be very chilly. I was walking on the golden gate bridge on a July afternoon, and it was already cool, a 20 mph wind gust came and I nearly froze to death! lol.
I usually prefer the milder climate, but Half Moon Bay is too cool in the summer, and the cool nights of Livermore make up for the heat. Too dry though, but still pick Livermore.
Half Moon Bay. The winters aren't much colder in Livermore, and summers are much cooler in Half Moon Bay. My dream summer isn't a summer at all, it averages 73/44F.

Livermore, but it's not great, even for a Med climate.
Is it just me, or is there something really strange, climate wise, that they have the same record low?
