Dunedin Wiki. data is incorrect/out of date. Mean sunshine hours are 1681 (and currently trending upwards). Mean rainfall in the city areas is 781mm (higher on the hills to the west and southwest, lower in some parts to the southeast). Diurnal range is greater away from the maritime site used here - higher Tmaxs, lower Tmins.

Carlisle sun is only 1405 hours, rainfall higher at 872mm, and rain days 148 cf. 125 (1.0mm+). Mean annual temp is 9.5C cf Dunedin's 11.1C. Winters are sunny compared to those at Carlisle.

Dunedin wins on all counts.

Both are horrific cloudy maritime climates, but Dunedin wins for being a little warmer and sunnier overall.

The summer difference is only 0.2C for the 3-month mean - and despite the shorter days Dunedin matches Carlisle for sunshine in summer - well ahead for the other seasons.

Carlisle has cooler temps, less sunshine and more rain. It also has higher latitude. So Carlisle it is.

Dunedin is sunnier and warmer year-round - given that my kind of beach weather never happens in these places, Carlisle's tiny summer lead doesn't matter.
