Well... it obviously depends on the room-temperature. If you open your window for a long enough time at 12°C the room-temperature will be far from being too hot to sleep. It gets too hot, if the temperature outside is too warm to cool down your room-temperature when you open your window for a certain time span. For me, that's normally the case at 17-18°C, but it certainly depends on how long you can open your window...

Sounds crazy to me. That sounds very comfortable, possibly coolish with lots windows open and if it will drop further (if it's clear it would here). It was 26°C at 1 am Thurs night where I was. I had trouble, mainly because it was hotter inside.

12C is on the mild side as far as sleeping weather goes, so if he's starting off the night with a hot indoor temperature and/or he likes to sleep in a big blanket and/or he's unwilling to open all the doors and windows all night (as opposed to just the window in his room) I can see how someone would think it too warm. That said, 12C isn't my idea of "far too hot to sleep in"; even I, living in what I consider a heat trap, wouldn't be too hot opening my window if it was 12C at 1 am, assuming that the evening temperature wasn't above 20C. 12C isn't exactly ideal sleeping weather, but it is adequate for opening a window for cooling (for the record, ideal would be -2C or so).

So, in closing, there may be peculiarities in his living situation that make cool nights a requirement for a comfortable bedroom, but in general I don't think 12C is poor sleeping weather.

In response to Nei's comment about the temperature dropping still further, I've spent many nights where the morning low isn't significantly lower than the temperature at 1 am, so it depends greatly on the weather fronts, cloudiness, windiness, and location. Also, even if it drops further until the morning low not being able to go to sleep until after 1 am isn't my idea of good sleeping weather, especially considering that the morning low will occur well before 8 hours has elapsed.

They might if they did have a home . Since the person in question is sleeping in a bedroom and not out on the street, could we please refrain from bringing homelessness into a weather discussion?

I know as Patricius said, homelessness is off topic, but a small tent is surprisingly heat keeping and 12°C is sufficient to feel warm inside the tent, though not necessarily too hot. For nights over 60°F, I'd actually prefer a bedroom (at least the ones I've lived in, which were all well-ventilated) over a tent, I remember a 64°F low in Vermont as noticeably uncomfortable whereas I'd be fine with it in my bedroom with a fan.

Maybe it was 30ºC outside during the day, cooled down to 12ºC at 1am, he sleeps in the attic and has yet to open a window.

Tell him to get a tent and a sleeping bag and sleep outside. I seriously know people who don't have AC who've done that before in heat waves. (100-105 F during the day here and 65-70 F as a low during those heat waves)
