Chch for more annual and more even sun, lower rainfall and also warmer.
According to environment Canada, Victoria has slightly more sunshine and slightly less rainfall year round than Christchurch but Christchurch has much more even distribution of both

Enviro Canada states Victoria gets 2193 "bright sunshine" hours annually. Something is wrong here. Seattle using the US method gets only 2174 hours. Blue Hill Obs using CS gets only 2250 for Boston (method Canada used), which is only 57 hours more than Victoria. Sorry but I find that hard to believe. Boston is sunnier than the PNW coastal areas by more than 57 hours annually.

IMO Victoria does not have much longer summer days,
longest summer day is 16 hrs 6 minutes, compared to Christchurch with 15 hrs 26 minutes.
Not a huge difference.

As deneb78 correctly pointed out, Victoria is sunnier (particularly in summer),
with slightly less annual rainfall (also with significantly drier summers).

Victoria also averages over 300mm less of precipitation and is sunnier in the summer.

Also 20 more precipitation days in Seattle.

Victoria is in a micro climate "rainshadow" and recieves about 25% less annual precipitation than Seattle-Tacoma AP. Victoroa and adjacent Gulf Islands are very sunny in summer and receive
much less rain in summer than Boston.

It might be hard to believe, but Victoria might actually be slightly sunnier than Boston

Lucky dog! I'm jealous Did you enjoy the city/area?

Sounds like you just hit a spell of below normal temps and rainier than normal conditions.
Next year, at the same time of year you could just as easily experience above normal conditions and get the false impression that Victoria is like California

The 2086.4 number I gave (1971-2000) was from Environment Canada! I see they now have the 1981-2010 ones available, but you have to download them it says.

Not based on the official sunshine hours. If you use Blue Hill at 2250 hours that is more than Victoria. The rest of Victoria and Vancouver is even more cloudy than the anamoly at Gonzalez Hts. Victoria Intl Airport gets only 2086 hours. I wonder if the Olympic Mountains provide a rain shadow at Seattle and that is the reason for the difference between Seattle and Vancouver. Does Canada still use the CS (glass sphere) method of measuring "Bright Sunshine" at Victoria, or electronic sensors?

Yes it does, at least for the 1971-2000 records.
