Which one of these locations is more likely to maintain a continuous snowpack all winter?
At first it may seem obvious, but check out the snowfall totals for each place...
They're very similar for January and February, with the majority of years with continuous snowpack and some with patchy snow pack. 27 days/year on average with snow on the ground in Jan and 23 in Feb for Minneapolis and 25 days/year on average with snow on the ground in Jan and 22 in Feb for Yakutat. Yakutat comes out better for snow lovers in that the snow season lasts much longer. December and March have almost as much snow cover as January and February while in Minneapolis the snowpack disappears quickly.
Looking at the stats, Yakutat had snow last until May 26, 1972. And a record high snowdepth of 100 inches the same winter, there was 66 inches on the ground May 1st. (254 cm, 168 cm).
Minneapolis looks like they have a record of 38 inches/97 cm.
I still pick Minneapolis. Snowfall averages can be misleading.
