Winter has come early in Bavaria. Unexpected heavy snowfall has brought traffic to a halt in southern Germany, as well as Austria and Switzerland, and left thousands of people without power.
It was temporary chaos in southern Germany on Friday after as much as 40 centimeters (15.7 inches) of snow fell in some areas. The early winter weather has toppled trees and downed power lines in Bavaria, leaving about 12,000 people without electricity, and authorities told school children and drivers to stay home. In the Austrian province of Tyrol alone, nearly 30,000 people were lacking power.
Many key traffic routes in Germany, Austria and Switzerland have also been affected. Germany's rail operator, Deutsche Bahn, was forced to suspend operations around Munich, while snowfall on the Autobahn left many drivers stuck.
Germany's DWD weather service recorded 35 centimeters of snowfall, the most at the beginning of the winter half-year since measurements began in 1800. Some parts of Switzerland experienced as much as 80 centimeters of snowfall.
My guess is that the most positive anomalies for the month will hug the East Coast, and most of the areas in month-to-date positive territory will have those positive anomalies wiped out by the time the month is over. Keep in mind we're only halfway through the month, so it wouldn't take that large or long of a cold spell to erase the month-to-date warmth. Certainly it will need to be quite cold, but nothing unprecedented or even unexpected will be required (well, Wavehunter doesn't expect it ).
I didn't think we could stay so far above normal forever on the East Coast...but I still think a drastic cool down winter fans are hopping for is not in the offing. Next will be cooler, but not greatly so.
Most NWS stations in the Ohio Valley and eastern USA are running massive 5 to 7 F above normal...and there is zero cool air expected anywhere east of the Mississippi until Sunday. That puts us to the October 20th. I really doubt we will end the month below normal at most NWS stations in the eastern USA. In fact, I still see low 60's for highs in places like NYC and Washington DC next week...and normal highs only in the mid 60s F I think. So it would have to turn into a record cold last 10 days of October....and we both know that is not going to happen.
