With dark nights, aurora borealis also returns. There's a video of them that was incidentally recorded near the town I work in last night.

Summer is not over there with temps in the 60's in Alaska summer is over when it goes below freezing.

Actually it looks like it'll go below freezing Friday night into Saturday. The temperatures look more like fall than summer or winter. Temperature in interior Alaska can often exceed 25C in June and July, after all. It seems like late August and September would be fall there, as there's less seasonal lag, while winter starts in October.

Sorry I must clarify when I say freezing I mean during the day, in Alaska it can be below freezing any night of the year.
