Yup, DEN sits at 5300 feet. So if 850 = 5000 Denver at 836mb makes sense. Leadville (LXV) sits at 9900 feet so the 714mb makes sense. Sometimes I use the 700mb level and wow to when you see locations at that level. lol
850 temps simply means surface to Denver and non existant to Leadville. LOL. Just means valleys below leadville I guess since they are higher than the 850 level.
One thing I learned recently is that 850mb in the East = 4000 feet. In the West its 5000 feet. Not sure why yet.
Check out Riverton, WY (RIW). Actual weather balloon launch data from this morning. No 850 level because they sit at 5567 feet as is.(higher than the 850 level)
I have a gut feeling that the current lull in hurricane activity in the Atlantic will change to a blitzkrieg of hurricanes this fall, probably just in time to create another October blizzard in the Eastern U.S. .

Hmm, interesting question. I know colder locations will generally have a lower 850 mb level. There may be a humidity dependence as well. Read about it, can't remember.

Thanks guys. "rich semantic info", love that. It invites questions for those not familiar as opposed to a word that implies a height.
Hey.. I used to say megabytes when mentioning 500mb. LOL! Then someone reminded me its Millibars. LOL It's all a learning process. Nothing wrong with that.
My favorite level of the atmosphere is that 850mb level so since Fall and Winter are coming you'll hear me talk about it a lot. It's something we rarely hear out there.
Here's the current temps at that level. Whenever your under the oranges and reds(20-35°C) the surface is going to be hot. Yellows (10-20°C) this time of year is seasonable. Waiting for the lovely freezing line to drop down. Usually don't see it a lot until October.
Why would you not hear it? Isn't the 850pha level the area that is most important?, I mean it controls whether it will snow or not.
The freezing line will give frosts and maybe single figures but you need at least -5c for snow. At this time of the year probably lower.
Though, the darkest colors are higher elevation areas, so the surface temperatures may not be hotter than a lower elevation location with cooler 850 mb temps.
Are those areas hotter because they are high up and so the land heats the air?

Love how the cold air respects the Canada-US border.
Looks like mid-40s predicted for here Thursday night into Friday. Mid-30s in the Poconos.
