NYC summers are pretty horrid, but even during the worst years there's a handful of pleasant days that offer a reprieve from the heat and humidity.

Typically most rain is short-lived, often comes down in moderate-heavy thunderstorm that last no longer than an hour. Sometimes few passing rainy clouds, and sun comes back quickly. There could be up to two weeks drought as well.

Compared to my ideal climate, where it might only rain 5 or 6 times in the entire summer, that is too much. The amounts are too high as well.

I don't get where all this talk of unbearable heat comes from. Brisbane is warmer than NYC day and night and does not have unbearably hot summers.

NYC's summers (like Chicago's) are warm, not hot by American standards. Though at times the heat can certainly be too much for some. Hotter summers are found in Nashville, St Louis, Memphis, DC, and Atlanta. Of course broiling summers would be Kansas, OKC, Houston, Dallas, and obviously Las Vegas, and Phoenix.

Brisbane does have warmer temps on average, but I don't see many episodes of real big heat at least in recent years (since 1999). I presume temperatures are more uniform throughout....

According to the available data that I can see, the highest average max was 32.1C in December 2005. I counted 30 days at or above 32.2C/90F for that year. I would like to know how many days on average Brisbane sees at or above 32.2C/90F.

Mean Maximum Temperature - 040913 - Bureau of Meteorology

Daily Maximum Temperature - 040913 - Bureau of Meteorology

Mean Maximum Temperature - 040913 - Bureau of Meteorology

Brisbane Aero I assume is near the ocean as temps are lower.

Mean Maximum Temperature - 040842 - Bureau of Meteorology

Chicago had an average high of 33.4C last July with 47 days at or above 32.2C/90F and 6 days at or above 38C/100F at Midway airport. Where I live in the far south suburbs about 40 miles away from the Lake Michigan breezes, the average high was near 33C for both July and August 2010 and 2011 as well.

I may be wrong about this, but it looks as if Brisbane doesn't see extreme episodes of heat that NYC and Chicago can see during the summer. I assume that further inland the temps get really hot though.

Since I've been here, the highest it has been was 37C. I went back home last xmas when temps hit 40C around the Brisbane area.

Brisbane sees temperatures higher than anything in NYC, but the past few years have been much cooler than average. There isn't any data on days of 32C as that is a fahrenheit conversion and meaningless over here.

Brisbane CBD (20km inland)
>30C: 66.5 days
>35C: 3.3 days
>40C: 0.5 days

Brisbane Airport (on the coast)
>30C: 28.1 days
>35C: 1.1 days
>40C: 0.1 days

Ipswich (40km inland)
>30C: 86.0 days
>35C: 14.1 days
>40C: 0.8 days

You mean like your ridiculous notions of winters in Helsinki being akin to Neptune or Pluto, or that winters in New York are even remotely 'frigid'?

Summers in New York are hot, and very humid, to me. Brisbane is even worse, but that doesn't detract from New York having hot & sultry summers, especially in recent years. If this trend continues, then I will give New York's summers an F.

I would re-read that Neptune comment, it had nothing to do with Helsinki and everything to do with being a sarcastic comment about the hill behind Owen's house.

New York winters are frigid. Dec 2010 was the coldest month I've ever experienced, but it was warmer than an average January in NYC.
