Same as when people from the Eastern U.S think that everytime we have an earthquake, everything crumbles around us. Most earthquakes feel like a little shake and that's it- last time someone died in an earthquake in my area was in 1989 and that was like 50 deaths in a state with over 40 million people at that time. I enjoy earthquakes in the 3.5 to 6.0 range cuz they are exciting and there is no damage done (in a first world country).
Weather (misspelling intentional), I enjoy a category 1 hurricane in a safe building with electricity, will only be tested if I experience one. I know lthat I LOVE thundestorms even though people die every year being struck by lightning (far, far more people die in car accidents in a week than people per year killed by lightning in an entire year in Florida and I still drive every day). In fact, I suspect the chance of being killed in a car accident are like 1,000 times higher than all the natural disasters combined in the U.S.
Life is a risk- you can stay locked in your house to avoid risks of any type (which is located in a place that gets no natural disaster to be extra safe) and you could die from boredom.
