East coast low? Is that a Extratropical cyclone? Is it common??
Basically it's a low pressure system that develops off the coast of NSW. It's just an ordinary low, but can bring heavy rain, high winds and coastal erosion if its strong enough and makes its way close enough to the coast.
The storms that occur in Bass Strait and in western and southern Tasmania make these "East Coast Lows" look like a pleasant 25C and sunny walk in the park
Just heard thunder and saw a very bright flash outside my window! Radar shows a tiny storm cell about 20km to my north.
No storms or anything forecast tonight. May be tonight will deliver some unexpected fun?
EDIT.... looks like it's all dying in the ass, like usual. A mass of storms in western Vic for the 4th ****en time in a week, and the lightning tracker is dying in the ass like a bitch as the system approaches Melbourne. Looks it'll flatten out into ****ing gay boring punce puke rain areas for us. Still, the trolls on the Australian Weather Forum will wet themselves counting their boring lame rain totals. At Miles, a town about 120km west of Dalby, the maximum is up to 39.9C so far today. Roughly 15C above average for September and 3.3C above the previous record (records going back to 1957). And it's only 12pm so it should go even higher. I don't think I have ever seen a record broken by that much before.
Meanwhile, it is up to 35.4C in Dalby, only 0.4C to go to beat the record.
A pleasant spring day today. I took some photos to try and capture the changing of the seasons.
The first one shows typical cloud buildup just before a heavy rain (160mm/6.5 inches forecast over night) Note how little snow there is on the hills. It's been the lamest ski season in quite a few years.
The next two photos show new spring growth on deciduous trees, and apple trees just starting to blossom.
A maximum temperature of 21C/70F today, but bucketing down with rain now and 15C/59F at 7.45 pm
Looks like all storms are slipping south this time. It is truly ****ing astounding, that just about everywhere to the north, south, west and east gets storms, the ****ing Tasman sea at the latitude has seen more storms this winter/spring than I can poke a derp rod at and even Bass Strait is getting far more action.
