You can get that kind of weather in summer too?!?

I would have assumed that a place like Melbourne was only cloudy, dark and cool about 4 months a year normally, perhaps 5-6 months a year in bad years.

Toronto can also go a full week without sunshine mid-summer, but it's a lot rarer than it is in other seasons.

yes we occasionally do. Max temps have been as low as 14ºC in mid summer. Such awful weather is rare, usually the coldest max temp we get in Jan and Feb is about 20ºC.

Melbourne summers are typically warm and sunny, similar to LA for example.

Central Iowa. Really haven't had any yet.

Thermometer on the deck (south) hit 72 today. Took a nap out there. Very nice.

Later this week..... Uh oh!

I've seen summer max temps as low as 12 C (54 F) in mid-summer. Those are typically days where it starts out cool and the whole day is quite dark and overcast and simply refuses to warm up.

If I was to move halfway around the world though in search of better "warm-sunshiney" weather, it sounds like Melbourne wouldn't be much of an improvement compared to Toronto.

We always get a few afternoons at or below 20 C, usually we get at least one mid-summer afternoon only reaching 17-18 C.

*My preference for summer is having coldest maxes no lower than 27 C, but none lower than 24 C would do.

Ouch!

We only get maybe 10-20 afternoons a year that severe (or worse) around Toronto most winters.

No it wouldn't. Sure, we have more hot days, but those hot days are *always* followed by crap. Ironically, Melbourne's strong points are its winters, which are warmer than most places around the world at similar latitudes.

summer afternoons here below 20C are rare and usually only occur once during Jan and Feb.

I agree. I hate the cold and would rather 35C than 15C.

Weather that never goes about 80° or below 50° is perfect for me. Is there any place (other than pricey San Diego or San Francisco ) that meets that requirement?

Yes, you're talking about a Mediterranean climate, right? At one time, I had read about a few places that have that, but unfortunately it seems like the only place in the U.S. that has that climate is in southern California. It seems like there are a couple of places in the Holy Land that have that climate and maybe southern France??? Geesh, I wish I could remember the places they mentioned. If someone else doesn't come along who knows the areas, just google "Mediterranean Climate" and it should show the areas. Of course, not many of us would be able to just pick up and move across the globe.

I think in parts of Greece they have places with temps like that. You're right, South France also has a very Mediterranean climate. But as far as the US, San Diego would fit that bill.
