Lol, when did Sydney become tropical. The mean is more like 17.8C (64F) at Observatory Hill.
Mean temperature like that is found in hilly tropics (>400 m asl). For example, Bandung which is 700 m asl, has a mean of 23.6C. Compare that with the coastal Bangkok, which has an annual mean temperature of 28.7C. Coastal tropics have mean temperatures in the region of 26-29.With constant temperature, altitude really affect the mean.
I would really love to see a tropical city at the coast with a mean of 23C. That would be cool and pleasant.
Speaking of annual mean temperature I think Mecca has one of the highest with 30.7C

Oh I wanna go there someday, if I could. But that is similar to Miami in that there is a noticeably cooler period of the year. Deep tropics don't get that. Cities like KL, Singapore and Jakarta have pretty much the same temperature every month.
It's average annual temperature, not average annual max
Mean temp= average between daily high and daily low
Gee, relax, I get the two mixed up most of the time. Plus, we only use maximums & minimums in our weather records (there is no 'daily mean', at least on Wikipedia's entry of our climate).
Anyway, our mean average is 17C (did the calculation of minimum and maximum temps).
Btw, the OP didn't specify whether we're talking about 'mean' or 'maximum' - so I naturally went with 'maximum'...
Sorry for the reaction, I guess I just don't see what's confusing about it, seems like a pretty straight forward question. But I've been a weather nerd since I was 6 years old so...
In Malta the average annual temperature is 19.7C using Balzan data & 19C using Luqa.
