Definately. Biting cold and overcast Where's the vomiting smilie??

Melbourne wouldn't get that cold. Overnite lows of -1C occur in the outer suburbs sometimes but its always under clear skies.
So you like night time when it's overcast better, for asthetic reasons?
(you find it less ugly too?)

Where's my vomiting smile?
We're only slightly below seasonal...
And we could stay this cold or colder from now until early April.
(so it obviously doesn't surprise me)
It's possible for us to have highs at -5 C instead of +5 C this time of year.
Though it's usually sunny when it's severely cold,
I wouldn't rule out the chance of a -5 C high and -9 C low under overcast skies after November 9th
(the earliest I ever saw winter begin)
in this sub-Arctic wasteland climate.

Great to hear, mate.
And you wonder why Melbourne, or even Aukland New Zealand
(I don't think I'd want to be in NZ's South Island however )
don't sound that bad to me.

From a visual and psycological standpoint, yes, because I can't see it lol! However, being a stargazer, I still prefer clear nights. Overcast is unnacceptable at any time of the day or year, unless it's with humid tropical heat and rain. Ofcourse, to fullfill that requirement, I'd have to live Near the Glades, Southwest Ranches, Florida (PWS)

I think you'll be sorely dissapointed with Auckland. THey have crap summers, average lows 15- or 16C and highs 23C or so. Certainly cooler than Toronto, even your worst summers equal or better Auckland's. Their ALL TIME RECORD high is only 31C! Typically it wont exceed 28 or 29 in summer due to the oceanic influence. Their winters are very cloudy and wet.

New Zealand's South Island actually gets the highest temps in summer, most locations east of the ranges and inland from the Christchurch-Dunedin area can get a fair number of days above 30C, but again, you'll ALWAYS get cold fronts (like here) that put a prompt stop to all heat. Their winters are totally un-enviable though, even if they get somewhat warmer summers than Auckland.

Melbourne might be exciting for you during your first couple of years, there are several days above 30C and atleast one 40C day is a definate, but after a while, you'll get angry at the regular coldronts and seabreezes in summer bringing ugly overcast and max temps as low as 20C (occasionally less!)

---------------

got to 35.4ºC (96ºF) today, got some big dark cumulus cloud hanging around, might actually get a shower soon.

Forecast for tomorrow: 22 / 33ºC
