Surprisingly, lows above 80 degrees are quite rare here. It's common to have lows in the upper 70s, but we seem to have great difficulty reaching that 80 degree threshold.

Actually i think the right comparison for BA's central observatory would be with Central Park's station.

Edit: Just did the new research. 51 lows above 80F/26ºC for the central station ¿how many in Central Park?
Those records from LaGuardia correspond to the amount lows of at least 80ºF, not 26ºC. Considering that the US doesn't use decimals, an equivalent count would be the amount of days with lows of at least 26.4ºC (=79.52ºF, which would be rounded to 80ºF). For Buenos Aires Obs., it's 31 times. Considering that the frequency has risen due to growing UHI, I wouldn't say it occurs once every 4 years; the first record is from 1917, the second one is only from 1945, in this decade it has already happened 6 times.

It's true that the BA Obs is not really comparable to LaGuardia, but it's island a much more inland location than Central Park. On the other side, coastal Aeroparque is more greeny than LaGuardia and faces La Plata river in the northeast... If there was a station around La Boca it would be a closer to LaGuardia.

If you love the climate of BA, it's clearly not due to its summers, as you said NY gets more lows >80ºF than you'd like and overall you don't like lows over 70ºF. BA and NY summers are very similar... BA Obs gets slightly larger daily ranges than NY, which in extreme cases would equal to 80/95ºF in NY and 78/97ºF in BA, that may explain that not very significant difference in occurence of lows over 80ºF. Other subtle difference is that BA is more prone to cold fronts that provide occasional relief with lows in the 50s that take the averages down, but in order to keep them alike NY, it also means that heat tends to be more persistently intense (for instance, compare the 2013 summer in NY with the 2013/14 summer in BA).

36 for Central Park from 1942 (0.48 days per year).
65 since 1870 (0.44 days per year).

Is this mainly due to UHI around Dallas, or do smaller cities in the area also commonly have lows above 80F?

More than anyplace in the U.S. in my area since i have a west windflow all summer and with winds blowing off of nasty 90+ degree gulf water temps it is a steam bath from hell. Many times my lows are 82+ from late May will Oct. Sometimes the Tampa area will see lows around 86f when we are in a deep southwest windflow.
