If you were to walk 5 miles on a flat, paved trail with plenty of shade available along the way (you also have the option of walking in the open sun as well), which conditions would you pick?
1) Temperatures of 30 F under sunny skies and calm winds (no snow on the ground just to even out factors as much as possible). You can wear whatever clothes you want.
2) Temperatures of 30 C under sunny skies and low humidity. You can walk in the shade for most of the walk, carry a water bottle, even a squirt bottle, and wear a cap to shield yourself from the sun when in the few parts that are not shaded.
30F definitely. With sunshine, a vest, and some socks it would be a pleasantly brisk 5 miles. I also wouldn't be in any danger of overheating, something I cannot say for the 30C condition.
30C would be much nicer as I wouldn't have to bundle up and could just wear shorts and a tshirt and with a water bottle would be very enjoyable
30F with any weather conditions just sucks. It wouldn't matter what I was wearing, I wouldn't enjoy it.
30°F for me. Last winter I was hiking in the Harz Mountains when the temperature was around 23°F/-5°C with sunshine (but also 1 meter/3 feet of snow on the ground) and it felt quite comfortable.
Made 17 km (10 miles) that day.
30°C would be too hot for me, i would set my limit for longer hikings at about 25°C.
Surely 30 C. I do it under both conditions regularly and would much rather do it in 30 C. A dry 30 C day is beautiful. A humid one might be a bit annoying though.
30 F. As I said on the theme park thread, I hate walking anywhere when there's heat.
