Its still raining heavily and the temperature is 39.1 F. It will reach freezing tonight. Hope the ground still remains very wet as the cold air moves in. I want all the puddles in my yard to be icy tomorrow morning so that I can post a true winter picture like those fortunate folks in Texas.

Situation in St Louis looks real bad for warmth lovers.

Weird how there's a snowless strip from eastern Nebraska, through Iowa, Northern Illinois and the LP of Michigan. Seems as if snow is avoiding Omaha, Des Moines, Chicago, and Detroit this winter. But it's still early so if I lived in that area I wouldn't lose hope yet.

Lots of discussion going on at the Weather Journal blog by Kevin Myatt of the Roanoke Times. I've done my usual prep for possible power outages and am hoping that most, if not all of it will not be necessary. We already had an overnight outage just a couple of nights ago.

With so many areas having difficulties it would mean that it would take time for power to be restored in this rural area since places with much higher population densities understandably get higher priority and that is where crews get sent first.

It's the same areas that the snow didn't hit during the earlier parts of the previous winter. If the same thing happens this year then I'd say they would be in the running for the most rotten luck in meteorological history. Parts of western Kentucky have probably* received more snow during the past two Decembers than Chicago has during the same time period.

As you said, though, I wouldn't lose hope for a turnaround later in December or in January. Big-time snowfall can come even very late in the season, with Duluth's experience last April being a recent and stark example.

*Judging by Paducah receiving two big snows in both Decembers with Chicago's snow being bird's feed by comparison, and the general track of southern snows over the past two winters following the Jonesboro-Evansville corridor for some strange reason. Another oddity is the repeated hits of winter weather Oklahoma has been receiving from 2009 onward, far in excess of what they received previously .

Going over the latest... Looks like Ice starts Sunday morning in Virginia and works its way north all day.

Here's the latest NAM model at Hour 27, 10pm Sunday.

850 temps and precip on left. Surface temps on right.

Let me explain this...

At 10pm the greens is precip falling to surface, the blue line on the left is the freezing line at 4000 feet so anyone north of the blue line is getting frozen precip....

Now look at the surface on the right.. Anyone south of the blue line is above freezing but anyone north of the blue line is below freezing and snowing at 10pm Sunday

Now... ready for a kicker... You see the precip south of the blue line on the left? That means there's a warm layer above, notice some of those same areas the surface is below freezing. That's ice falling.
