For Washington, DC on average about twice per winter, most likely in February, though it can vary, with some seasons having several (2010-11), others one or two (2012-13), and others none at all (2009-10). DCA has even exceeded 80F twice in February, so that's approximately a one in 70 year event (for now). Its less likely in December and especially January, in which DC's only reached 70F once in the last five years. But it looks like Sunday may potentially reach that threshold again, and right when the excitement for Xmas peaks. If I want warmth leading up to the holiday, I'd rather live in the tropics, lower subtropics, Mediterranean climate zone, or Southern Hemisphere.

Sunday will be the day for record highs, and it will reach 65.5 F, Just 1.5 F short of the daily record high. 70 F + is extremely rare in winter and happens only once in 50 years. Highs in the 60's F happen every 2-5 years though.

Quite often. We hit 81 yesterday. Last week though, our highs were in the 50s.

Generally never. Except for that bizarre heat wave in late March 2011 thought that was bordering on spring.

It's certainly warmer, but the temperature deviation is far smaller in Rome. For example, February 1998 in Zagreb had a record high of 25.8c, an average high of 13.1c, an average low of -0.7c and a record low of -8.2c, while February 2012 had a record high of 18.2c, but an average high of 2.2c, an average low of -7.2c and a record low of -18.1c.

We will be above 70 most of this week. It seems to be about a 50/50 chance you can comfortably wear shorts on Christmas in Houston.

I like to visit the cold to go skiing, but I don't ever want to live in it.

It's super fun here - south of Houston - started out Monday morning at 31, yesterday on the way home was 68, this morning was 48 on drive to work, and betting on mid 70's until the next cold front comes in, and then it'll be back to 30's in the morning, 60's in the afternoon. But it's sunny! So, yes, we have 70+ days in the winter, and if you don't like that, we have 30's on the same day!
