I hate, hate , HATE it when the media talks about windchill temps as if they were actual temps. A -50 C actual temp is much more impressive and rare than a -50 C wind chill. The title of this thread is a bit misleading.

Even a -5C windchill is rare in the UK, so it is pretty newsworthy for Brits

No, it's not!
Of course, we don't usually get -55C "windchill" so it's easy to see why our media gets all excited about it.

30C in summer is more common than a -5C windchill in winter, though.

I absolutely hate it when newspapers do this.. 30C is not rare at all so I don't see why newspapers make a big deal out of it every year when we get 30c spells.

Eh, probably not up here, although if it's -5C, you can presume it is calm too, so no windchill effect.

10°C in Paris right now and not even raining! doesnt even feel like actual winter! still...from experice, I know we'll pay that later , with snow episodes in February -March and and a rainy spring when Chicago and the Midwest will have a glorious weather! make your choice : atlantic or continental climate - each has its perks and its shortcomings...-
