Ideally I wouldn't like it to be cloudy in either season. My ideal climate would feature 60-75% of the possible sunshine all year round. The only excuse for cloudy weather in summer would be convection related cloud, heavy rain and storms.

I like as much sunshine as possible throughout the course of a year.. But if I had to choose, I'd much rather a cloudy winter because sun is not that important in winter if it's not going to produce any appreciable warmth.

Edit - Accidentally voted for cloudy winter instead of cloudy summer for being worse..

Well, since Buxton is located inland a decent proportion of clouds in summer will be of the "convection type".

The problem here is that stable upper air keeps a lid on convection, meaning rather than forming regular thunderstorms and showers it forms into layers of stratocumulus, which gets quite tedious. So yes convection is often the initiator, but the overly stable nature of the atmosphere promotes extensive stratiform cloud development including in summer. In the end this means well short of 60-75% sunny skies in summer of course, more like 30-40%.

So really a continental or subtropical summer would be much more ideal.

Cloudy summers. In winter I don't care so much. Maybe my attitude is affected by the fact that it's cloudy anyway in winter, but i feel overcast foggy skies are a part of a snowy winter.
A cloudy summer is on the other hand devastating. The strong sun isn't with us for long anyway, so it's a bad thing if it's blocked by clouds continuously.

Cloudy winters of course. This adds up more coziness to the cold season.
Summers should be sunny with some rain from time to time: beach, outdoor activities, hiking,...

Cloudy winters, the sun makes cold feel nice. Also, clouds help relieve the discomfort of heat, so cloudy summers are good! The only issue is that in reality, clouds come with extra humidity, bleh!
