Interesting to see that the winter of 1978/1979 was also quite snowy in Chicago- this was the winter with our highest recorded snow depth here in Northern Germany.
Bremerhaven "only" had 37 cm (14.5 inches) as a maximum but larger parts of Northern Germany had snow amounts of 50-70 cm (20-28 inches) which are very unusual amounts of snow here.
That winter was also very cold here with the means of Januar and February being 4.5C (9F) and 4C (8F) below average and the snow cover lasted from about New Year until Mid March.

Do you know if the winter of 1978/1979 was also quite cold for the US as a whole and similiar or even more severe than the present winter of 2013/2014?

As of the 16th

Quote:
O’Hare International Airport carried the official snow total for the 2013-14 snow season to 79.3 inches; 0.1 inch at Midway Airport brought the snow total at that location to 85.3 inches — tantalizingly close to the Chicago all-time record of 89.7 inches in 1978-79.
Basically "officially" O'Hare wont beat the 78/79' seasonal total recorded at Midway when it was the official station, unless there is some big spring snows (not on the horizon) but Midway has a chance to be it's own record

Now officially the 2nd snowiest ever in Philly. 67.4 in (171 cm). Since where I live got slightly more snow with this storm, the one on March 3rd, and the one on December 8th, and no less in the other storms, if Philly has seen 67.4 inches, I'd wager my location has seen at least 70 inches.

Second-snowiest winter ever in Philadelphia
