The equator's highest sun angle is on the equinoxes and is 90°. The solstices are the equator's lowest sun points but yeah, I get what you mean. And I wouldn't call 38° way below Umeå; we had 38 degrees about two weeks ago.
51 here at the moment. I only start to notice the sun strength when it hits 60 degrees.
Speaking of tanning, yesterday I was out in the sun from 11-15 and got visible tanlines fron my t-shirt sleeves and v-neck. So it's definitely possible to start tanning now that the sun angle is 42°. Currently it's 17'C and it already feels very summerlike, and later today it's going to be 19'C, with accompanying sun. I'll be doing the same as yesterday. You really have to carpe the heat because after today, it's not going to be higher than mid-zero digits for over a week...
We seem to be constantly below average since early april now. Nothing extreme, but no warmth yet, and quite unsettled. Most days struggle to get past 20c, and the nights can still be below 10c. Still, I won't complain, spring is supposed to be varied !
