Naut Aran, in the Pyrenees at 42ºN and almost 2500m of altitude (El Tiempo. Hoy y últimos días: Naut Aran, Cap de Vaquèira - Resúmenes diarios anteriores - Tabla - Agencia Estatal de Meteorología - AEMET. Gobierno de España) has registered a minimum of -8.9ºC today, and in that zone (north of Spain) the cold wave affected too. In the last 7 days the warmest was 4.2/-2.7ºC and the 2nd coldest -8.1ºC in the night from 5th to 6th of January. It's quite rare to see -20ºC in Naut Aran, even being at 2470m of altitude. On Florina is simply impressing!
The coldest temperature in Florina is -25 C officially (January 2012). Unofficially there are stations that recorded even -29 C in the past. The city is the coldest and snowiest city in Greece. It is affected by north winds there is nothing to block the cold air masses in this region. And it is located in a plain that is affected by strong temperature inversion too. It has snow too. You can search about the city "Bitola" in FYROM. Bitola is just 15 km north of Florina. They have the same weather and climate.

I've searched it and wow, it seems even a bit cooler, and it's at 100m less of altitude. It also seems a nice town.

Temps in Europe from 10 minutes ago, at 15:55 (14:55 UTC)

The official weather station of Florina was bad conservated and in a place that was not too affected by temperature inversion so the climatic means in wikipedia are a bit warmer in winter... The last years they have changed the position of the station in a better place. So the weather in Bitola and Florina is actually the same. Even my city Serres at 35 m in 41 N has -23 C in 1963. When we have snow and cold masses like these in this period it is very cold here. Balkans just need cold from Russia to make miracles.

Pretty impressive.

I'm at 41.5N (188m) and my lowest is -33C in 1985.

Looks like heavy snow (higher elevations) in Greece and Balkans

Colder southern European pattern does not want to break

This will lead to good stream flow and a lush spring for Greece!

I was thinking that Chicago is colder than Serres and we are at the same latitude but Europe generally is warmer than America. For our standards is nice. Yes I hope that this winter will be colder and spring wetter.
