I'm not sure for the Nineties, I think a couple of times was partially frozen, but not completely. -5c now in my town, tomorrow minimum daily temperature -9c, maximum daily -3c.
Yes 2012 was also a very cold winter. 2004, 2005 and 2006 had also cold winters here. In 2004 and 2006 the lake of Ioannina froze like this month (not completely though).

Some people think that Greece is warm, but that is stereotype, Northern Greece has colder winters than Iberian peninsula, most part of Italy and the largest part western Europe. Florina(my favorite climate in Greece), has colder winters than any town in Spain, Portugal, Italy(except Alpine part), Britain, Holland, France(except Alpine part), Belgium and western part of Germany. Florina has very similar climate as Bitola in FYROM. Today is the twentieth ice day in this month in my town. Lowest temperature this winter in my town was -22c(12th January). Current temperature -2c.

Florina has the same climate as Bitola yes. They have a distance of approximately 15 km. We have cold weather some times in every winter. 50 to 60 days of frost per year in my city. I can't say that we have mediterranean climate in North Greece. We have some thunderstorms every summer while Athens has not.
