Based on climate alone, which of the following cities would you choose to spend your July?
A) San Francisco: Anemic summers with fog most mornings; sun comes out for a few hours on most days and the fog and wind comes back most late afternoons. Some days you might not see the sun at all. Shorts and tee weather only occurs maybe once or twice in July (way more common in October) and you need your jacket most late afternoons and evenings with the fog and wind making it feel cooler than the actual temperature. San Francisco is probably the only city in the world that has never had a tropical night (an overnight low above 68 F/20C) nor a hard freeze (a nightime low below 27 F/-3 C). You won't see any precipitation other than fog drip.
B) Sacramento: Sunniest July in the world with not a cloud in sight all month. Hot days with bone dry humidity, comfortable mornings and evenings, and actually a bit nippy by July standards if you get up before sunrise. Huge diurnal ranges. Any type of water falling from the sky in the month of July is a once in a generation event.
C) Miami: Hot, steamy, and humid with lots of sunshine and lots of rain. Beautiful thunderstorms but when it's not raining, the sun is shining but the heat index is a lot higher than Sacramento even if the daily highs are lower.
Of all these choices, San Francisco would be the lesser of the evils ... however, it's still not the perfect summer climate because it can be even colder than their winters at times. This is because San Francisco sits on a peninsula surrounded by the cold waters of the Pacific/San Francisco Bay. I have been there in the middle of July and nearly froze because the outdoor temperature was in the 60s with low clouds & a strong ocean breeze.
Sacramento, on the other hand, can be a little too hot in the summer months because it's inland and sits in the low elevation Central Valley. I've seen summer high temps in Sacramento reach the 100s on many occasions, and their normal highs in July & August are in the low 90s. Not horrible, but still not a great summer getaway spot. Besides, there isn't a whole lot to see or do in Sacramento compared to what San Francisco has to offer.
Sacramento would be my second choice, although its average lows are far too cool, and the diurnal range is too great, going from the 50's to the 90's (and vice versa) would be a bit of a shock to me.
