Table for April 2014

Monthly Review:
April was again far too warm with a mean of 11.2°C, so the streak of way above normal months which started in February also continued in this month. There were ten days with a maximum of 20°C or higher with the warmest being the 25th when an almost summer like maximum of 24.4°C was recorded. Also in seven nights the temperature remained in the double digits, which is also quite remarkable for April.
Cold days on the other hand were again scarce and only in two occasions the mercury remained in the single digits. Six nights fell below 5°C and the coldest night was on the 16th when a minimum of 1.3°C and widespread groundfrost was recorded.

Precipitation was in the average range with 49.2 mm which fell on 16 day with the wettest day being the 8th with an amount of 12.6 mm. As in most April months no snowfall was recorded and graupel only fell on the 14th. Very unsual was the high frequency of thunderstorm days with 4 days, which all appeared in the last 10 days of the month. Of all these days three thunderstorm events happened on the 26th and 27th alone.

Also Sunshine was in the average range for April, with 167.7 hours only slightly sunnier than the previous month. The 16th was the sunniest day with 12.9 hours, while two days remained without any sunshine at all.

Pittsburgh (PIT) April 2014
A superb month with a nice balance of warmth, cool days, and the occasional frosty evening. Although a cold-weather lover, this is what the doctor ordered after a colder-than-normal winter. First warmer- and wetter-than-normal month since Dec 2013; wettest since July 2013.

Washington, D.C. (DCA) April 2014
First warmer-than-normal month since Dec 2013, and also the 7th consecutive year with a warmer-than-normal April, partly due to the warming Potomac adjacent to DCA. However, Dulles, BWI, and downtown Baltimore were all cooler-than-normal by at least 0.7F. Record wettest April for Dulles and second-wettest for BWI; downtown Balt had 0.7" more rainfall than BWI, higher than even the official record 8.70"/221.0 mm in Apr 1889
