I think I was on that border. I know I haven't lost 100% of my accent, but it also didn't help that I returned to PR every summer as a kid and only spoke Spanish. If I never did that, I'd probably sound authentically Pennsylvanian.
I saw your earlier accent map and you colored out the PA German part. Definitely agree. I have an Amish friend and his native language is PA German, and his accent is peculiar. I sound more American than he does!
It's not my map. (Source is the Washington Post.) But yeah, that's obviously a big exception there.
You have to be here from a young age. The later in life you move to a place the harder it'll be to pick up a dialect.
I could attest to this. I still do have a Desi slang, though it has mostly morphed. My NY accent is best when used in sports bars and times of impatience .
