If you wanna hear some real southern accents, the restaurant at Cheaha Mountain State Park in eastern Alabama is a great place...lol. To say it's a strong accent would be an understatement.
I would say NoVa has some true Southerners mixed in, but any southern accents would be pretty subtle for the most part. Heck, even here in Atlanta you don't hear it much unless you get about 25 miles out from the city proper.

Stopped at a gas station in Cusseta, GA one time on the way to Alabama. I could not understand a single word the cashier was saying lol. Seemed friendly enough though. Also got pulled over somewhere on the same trip (Blakely, GA?) I don't think I've ever met such a nice cop in my life.

Make sure you eat at the restaurant - the food is great, the view is even better. And be sure to soak up those good, old-fashioned southern accents..lol.
I don't get where that impression comes from at all. West Virginia is part of Southern Appalachia.
Would you say Morgantown, WV is "Southern"? Didn't seem very southern to me when I passed through. I don't think all of WV could be considered into one region, seems like a transitional state IMO, similar to KY or VA (though KY is much more southern than VA).

When I first went to America we had to eat so went into KFC and there was this black woman in there on the tills. We could not understand a word of what she was saying.

Hmm, probably won't be able to eat there. We'll be there in the morning, so it would be too early for lunch. Plus, we need to get to Jackson, TN that night and we have a lot planned that day.

Apparently she was speaking English.
More like "black English" or Ebonics, as it's termed. Quite a bit different than standard English - at least in my opinion. Takes some getting used to, for sure.
