There are certain cases where I wouldn't really object to the death penalty being used, but overall don't see much purpose in reinstating it. And having the state as executioner makes me a bit uncomfortable.
While I agree those examples are too short, often very long sentences don't serve much purpose. Might be more just, but likely isn't much of more of a deterrent. The US definitely oversentences non-violent offenders.

Yes they do, they keep the bastards off the streets so they can't attack other innocent victims.

Well yes for violent criminals. But there limits on how long a sentence is reasonable. Often those who stay in prison long-term are more likely to reoffend and have limited job prospects afterwards. The American prison population per capita is enormous.
