You had me confused there momentarily.... I went looking through for the record high daily minimum (67F last four days of the month) and record high monthly avg minimum (56.0F, 2012), before realising no other May at BDR stayed >= 47F the whole month. The frequent unsettled weather and back-door cold fronts must have played a major role in that.
Unfortunately NWS Upton, NY doesn't go descriptive in Monthly Weather Summaries like NWS Sterling, VA does, so if one doesn't dig into records often, these types of records may slip unnoticed.
DCA only dipped to 49F, which ties for 4th highest May monthly minimum (record was 52F in none other than 2012).
Yup.. I was on my phone when I checked the stat.. and Yup.... It's true... I just double checked....
Bridgeport(BDR) has had a low temp in May of 46°F or lower every year on record...except this yr. (47° was the minimum). (Did not drop below 47F)
I think the story of the month was the dryness(little mugginess) and more cooler highs then recent years.
May 2014 started cloudy with frequent rain and drizzle, turning to hotter than normal later. It is also extremely wet with more than double the normal precipitation, including 2 days of over 100mm.
Why would BDR be warmer than Windsor locks? Is it more urban? Or in a valley or something? Or is it the other way around?
Both are in valley but BDR is in southern CT on the coast and typically warmer except in Spring. The lows are always warmer on average. But the max temps northern CT is a bit warmer than the coast.
Even the Average temps catch up. May Average on coast 59.1°F. May average in northern CT 59.5°F. This is attributed to the waters in the spring.
And I thought the cold waters would help keep temps cooler. Looks like it wasn't the case because the water temps warmed a bit above normal in May.
Also good to note that northern CT experienced more clouds hence another reason why maybe they didn't have warmer temps.
Washington, D.C. (DCA+IAD) May 2014
6th warmer-than-normal May at both airports in a row. Along with Dulles, BWI and the Maryland Science Center also logged their first warmer-than-normal month since Dec 2013. A wet first half of the month ending with cold front-associated t'storms on the 16th, while the final 15 days the measurable rain that fall was more from typical summer pop-up t'storms. Temperatures didn't stay in one area for too long. B+ from me, although was disappointed by IAD lagging 2.6 in highs behind DCA; they're normally very close. Must have been all that extra soil moisture...
Year-to-date precip at DCA: 22.29"/566 mm, or 39.7% above normal
Year-to-date precip at IAD: 24.35"/618 mm, or 44.8% above normal
Season-to-date snowfall at DCA: 32.0"/81 cm, or 108% above normal
Season-to-date snowfall at IAD: 52.8"/134 cm, or 140% above normal
At DCA, there were 2 "clear", 20 partly cloudy, and 9 cloudy days, a decided improvement over last month, but May is normally sunnier anyway; for IAD it was even better with 1 "clear", 25 partly cloudy, and 5 cloudy days.

Pittsburgh (PIT) May 2014
6th warmer-than-normal May in a row, with rain slightly above normal. The back-door cold front that came through just a few days ago didn't move past the Appalachians, so the area did not really cool down in the latter third of the month. Last year, there was a freeze on the 14th and a near-frost toward the end of the month; this year clearly came nowhere close.
Year-to-date precip: 15.09"/383 mm, or 0.0662% (0.01") below normal
Season-to-date snowfall: 63.4"/161 cm, or 53.1% above normal
There were 3 "clear", 16 partly cloudy, and 12 cloudy days, a slight improvement over last month, but May is normally sunnier anyway.
