Both are approximately 580 meters asl, both are relatively dry but not arid, both are located 350 km away from the nearest Mediterranean coast.
Thus, Madrid is located 550 km away from the nearest Atlantic ocean coast, whereas Clermont-Ferrand is located 435 km away from it:

Madrid for the hotter summers. Gotta have at least 3 months of poolside weather.

Didn't realise Clermont was elevated that much!

I give Madrid the win though for being warmer

Clermont is an A to A minus depending on sun, Madrid a B minus.

Clermont-Ferrand easily. It's less hot in summer, has summer precipitation maximum, and is cooler in winter.

Thus, most of its summer precipitation appears to be convective by thunderstorms.
Madrid is the same, but is a less thundery and drier place.

^^ Speaking convective rainfall, Clermont-Ferrand got 12 mm from a thunderstorm today.

As ofr the battle, it's a tough decision. Madrid's summer temps are much better, but I really don't like dry summers. I prefer Clermont's more "abundant" precipitation and slightly cooler, significantly duller winters. So Clermont it is.

Wiki displays the 1971-2000 averages. Here are the new ones, with sun:
CLIMAT %%% par Météo-France - Normales et relevés sur la station de %%%

It has warmed up a bit, with temps now 7.6/-0.1°C in January and 26.5/14.0°C in July.
It gets 1913 hours of sun per year, ranging between 249 in July and 69 hours in December.

It isn't, the weather station is located 330 m asl and the city averages around 360 m. Only the highest parts reach 600 m, but their averages would be different.

Clermont-Ferrand for me, it's another climate that resembles my own.
Madrid is too hot in the summer.

Oops, that's my fault.
Anyway, it is more elevated than most of Frech territory.
