Jeff Master's blog post (well, written by another meteorologist) is titled Winter's Back!

Dr. Jeff Masters' WunderBlog : WINTERS

For over a week now, the models have been extremely consistent on the projected track for this storm, with the storm center tracking from the eastern Great Lakes/Ohio Valley thru the interior of New England. This should result in mostly rain in the Boston-Washington DC coastal corridor, while heavy snows fall inland.

On the hopeful side,

For this reason, there is a reasonable chance of seeing Temps return to near and eventually above normal levels during the second half of JAN.

Worst of the cold looks to be in the Midwest

As George in Chicago so well stated yesterday, all bets are off with sudden stratospheric warming. And according to Brett Anderson at AccuW, that will happen around Jan 5th, with the extreme cold to hit us in the second half of January. Just like last winter.

On the bright side, those temps are very good for the snowfall and glaciers there. Also, I saw a special about wolverines in the US. They love it the colder and snowier the better. They have been having trouble surviving with the warmer winters recently, but last year and this year they have thrived. They do all their feeding and bulking up in winter by getting the prey under the snow. They don't get much food over the summer. Incredible species native to the US, Canada, Russia, Norway, etc.

The Travels of Nancy Chalmers -- LOVE MONTANA: October 2011

From the book "The Wolverine Way":

Wolverines live in the COLD...at the tops of mountains. To hold in the heat of this engine, wolverines wear a double coat – a dense inner layer of air-trapping wool beneath a cover of stout guard hairs to add extra insulation.

Wolverines come preloaded with what looks to us like an insane amount of attitude. But to back it up, they have powerful limbs that go with their weapons – well developed claws, sharp front teeth (the incisors), long fangs (canines), and check teeth (premolars and molars ) specialized for cutting rather than grinding. The combination makes them considerably bigger and more dangerous in deed than in stature. And this gives them the reputation of being the “bad ass” of the animal kingdom.

And this tagged one from Montana is called Big Daddy

An exceptional cold wave brought historic snow with accretion in many cities in Southern Italy, including Sicily. A lot of snow in inner areas, hills and mountains, but also some snow along the coasts.
Naples, Salerno, Bari, Brindisi, Taranto, Reggio Calabria, Messina, Taormina, Palermo, Trapani, Agrigento, Siracusa and more!

Wow!? Really? Interesting. I saw this graphic they made and was going to post yesterday but I didn't know if it was worth it or anything worth mentioning. Looks like cold air dove down and a big storm came along?

My cousin (the warm wx lover that hates winter) is from Sicily. I have to tell him now.

Do you have any links to news storys with pics?

Edit: Found this: http://www.youreporter.it/ I see the snow on the coast too
