It's sods law!

June: sunny (320 hours in Portsmouth) and slightly warmer than average (but no exceptional heat)!
July: sunny (320 hours in Portsmouth) and warmer than average, a long hot spell (no real exceptional heat).
August: (the holiday month!) potentially one of the dullest Augusts in my life, the wettest in a decade and the coolest in decades!
Forecast for the first week of September from the BBC yesterday: (The week many go back to school/work!), Settled weather coming in, high pressure dominating to the south, temperatures recovering to around normal to above normal, and much more sunshine...

Does god hates us?! LOL

Fair enough... Though imagine children going back to school and Parents back in work after a terrible August. Then on the first day back to reality, bright sunshine and temperature reaching 36.0c, a September record! That would be both funny and annoying!

I'd love it if there was. Don't think it will be though. It wouldn't be hard to get a September warmer than this August which was the coldest since 1993. I hope that would happen but realistically it won't.

In Buxton we only get to 20°C about once in September and usually in the low/mid teens with a lot more rain and cloud. Avg high is 15°C so very autumnal month.

Haha, 16c is like the average here in October and we expect 20c days to happen right up until mid October, sometimes late October. So that is quite funny. You'd like it to happen, but would rather it happened in August, or during a weekend in early September...

I know I used to live in Berkshire so I'm pretty familiar with the averages down there. I remember Octobers warmer than an average August here and reaching 25°C as well (like in 1995). That said Buxton reached 25°C in October 2011. A repeat of September 2006 or 2011 would do me up here.

Yes, I think there will be a spell of decent warm weather in September in the UK

Define heat wave? Above 30C? Above 32C? I highly doubt it.

Whether or not it will be warmer than normal the CFSv2 is saying likely near normal

I can guarantee that won't happen in Scandinavia at least.

Of the 20 last Septembers in Helsinki, 3 have been below average, 5 average, and 12 above average. Very unfavourable odds.

Well, the met office states a heatwave in the south east is a max of 31c+, and a minimum of 16c+ for 2 to 5 consecutive days, so I guess that is what I define as a heatwave.
However, (I think) The World Health organization, or something, says it's temps 5c above the average witch for mid September is a max of 24c (though considering the UK in September sees many days exceed this the Met Office and I would say a 24c being called a heatwave is a massive underestimate!).
Despite this, It is possible to have a week heatwave and still end up with an average month, though that would have to be balanced out with a cool snap...
Also, tbh Indian summers happen quite often in the south during September and early October, though hardly go above 31c...
