October has featured some pretty crazy weather here. What are some records and significant weather events that you recall in the month of October?
Early October 2007: Record heat with two days reaching 30 C and one reaching 31 C.
October 28, 2008: Afternoon snowfall
October 15, 2009: Earliest snowfall on record
October 29, 2011: Biggest snowstorm on record in October with up to 19 inches/48 cm of snow (West Milford, NJ...I don't live in this town, but it's nearby, my area received somewhere between 10-12 inches)
October 29, 2012: Hurricane Sandy; although there was a lot of rain with this storm, it's most remembered for the significant wind damage it caused here.
1st October 2011: 29.9C in Gravesend, highest October temperature on record.
28th October 2008: Light snowfall in London, the first October snowfall for 74 years.
16th October 1987: The Great Storm hits London, the mean wind speed for the day was 33.7 km/h, with a maximum gust of 122.2 km/h. October 1987 was also the wettest month on record at Heathrow, with 174.8mm.
it's an Oct record high temp for Wanaaring and Walgett Airport. South Australia and Queensland also had some very hot readings. Rounded 43.0C at Bedourie Police Station (record 43.4C), 42C at St George Aiport (record), 42C rounded at Cunumulla (record 41.8C), 43C at Thargomindah Airport (record).
The first that of course comes in mind is October 2002, the coldest on record. The first three days were normal, but after that a huge arctic blast hit down on us and stayed with us for the remainder of the month. Helsinki airport recorded 5 ice days, and 21 nights below freezing. On the 22nd it recorded a low of -14.5C/6F, the lowest recorded since the station opened in 1951. For comparison, this October has so far been cooler than normal in Helsinki, and it has recorded 7 nights below freezing, and unlikely to record more.
Both Helsinki Centre and Helsinki A had a mean temp of 0.6C for the month, 6C colder than normal, the coldest since 1900.
Ironically, both November and December were too colder than normal, so it was the longest winter on record. In Turku, already November had a mean temp of -3.6C, while February 2002, statistically the coldest month had a mean of -0.9C. The winter 2002-2003 had its climax in January, when Helsinki A hit -30C for the last time so far.
Another event I remember is the record-breaking autumn warmth in early October 2005. Already the end of September had been above normal and the time period between 24 September and 14 October had a high-low of 15.2C/7.9C in Helsinki, conditions which are regular in places like Berlin. Though we didn't break any record highs, the consistency of the temps was amazing. Some nights failed to drop below 10C, and daytime highs were around 15-17C. And it was bone dry as well. The average high on 10 October is like 10C.
After the 14th temps started to drop to more normal, but still a bit above average until the last week. But as always here, the weather punches you in the face at some point. The last week saw temps plummeting, lows fell well below freezing down to even -7.8C at the 28th. Several cm of snow fell in Helsinki and stayed for a few days. So eventually the month ended just 1.4C above normal. But the good things didn't stop there. The temps recovered quickly and the 1-15th November period in Helsinki C was the 5th warmest since 1829, and at the airport failed to go below freezing a single time. During the period 1-15th at the airport the hi-lo was 9.1C/5.7C. These kind of averages are common in Budapest in early November.
A bit long read, but I just had to beat the sub-par OP.
Exactly one year ago today(October 26, 2013) we had low temperature of 31°F or first below the freezing temperature. This year the lowest temperature is 41°F so far.
Hurricane Lili came on October 3, 2002. It made landfall in south-central Louisiana that morning and caused some significant damage there. It reached category 4 strength the afternoon before, but luckily it then rapidly weakened to category 2 strength before landfall.
It went up to central Louisiana during the afternoon of October 3 and caused some damage here as well. Alexandria reported estimated wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph with 4-6 inches of rain in the area and a few small tornadoes to the south.
