I remember there was a thread asking if its ever snowed down to the city...well... Here we go.

Anyone traveling there for New Years eve heads up and stay safe.

National Weather Service Watch Warning Advisory Summary

Quote:
LAS VEGAS VALLEY-
216 PM PST MON DEC 29 2014

...VERY UNUSUAL WEATHER IN LAS VEGAS FOR NEW YEAR`S EVE AND DAY...

NORMALLY SUNNY AND MILD LAS VEGAS IS EXPECTED TO EXPERIENCE UNUSUAL AND POTENTIALLY HISTORIC WEATHER FOR THE NEW YEAR`S EVE INTO NEW
YEAR`S DAY TIME PERIOD. A COLD AND SOMEWHAT MOIST STORM SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO PASS ACROSS THE MOJAVE DESERT BETWEEN TUESDAY NIGHT AND NEW YEAR`S DAY BRINGING A VARIETY OF HIGH IMPACT WEATHER WITH TO LAS VEGAS AND SURROUNDING AREAS.

MANY TOURISTS WHO COME TO LAS VEGAS MAY BE UNPREPARED FOR THE TRUE WINTER-LIKE CONDITIONS THIS STORM COULD BRING WITH IT. TRAVEL CONDITIONS COULD BE DIFFICULT - IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE - ON AREA ROADS STARTING TUESDAY NIGHT INTO NEW YEAR`S DAY INCLUDING ON ROUTES TO
LAS VEGAS FROM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA...FAR SOUTHERN NEVADA...NORTHERN ARIZONA AND SOUTHWEST UTAH. SNOW REMOVAL AND TREATMENT EQUIPMENT IS VERY LIMITED IN THE LAS VEGAS VALLEY ITSELF. PARKING ON ROADS PUTS YOUR VEHICLE AT RISK FOR BEING SLID INTO AND ALSO MAKES ACCESS ONTO STREETS HARDER FOR VEHICLES THAT NEED TO GET THROUGH EVEN IF A MINOR
AMOUNT OF SNOW ONLY FALLS. IN ADDITION...ANY SNOW...EVEN IF IT DOES NOT AMOUNT TO MUCH ACCUMULATION...WILL MAKE WALKWAYS AND SIDEWALKS VERY SLIPPERY. WEARING SHOES WITH GOOD TRACTION IS RECOMMENDED TO AVOID SLIP AND FALLS.

EVEN IF SNOW IS LIMITED IN THE AMOUNT THAT FALLS...VERY COLD
TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED IN LAS VEGAS WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES
ONLY EXPECTED TO BE IN THE 30S ON NEW YEAR`S EVE DAY AND ON NEW
YEAR`S DAY WITH LOWS DROPPING INTO THE UPPER 20S TO LOWER 30S.
ANYONE WHO PLANS TO BE OUTSIDE SHOULD TAKE PRECAUTIONS TO PREPARE
FOR BEING EXPOSED TO NEAR FREEZING OR SUBFREEZING TEMPERATURES FOR
SEVERAL HOURS. BRING LAYERS AND DRESS WARMLY.
Winter Storm Watches are up.

How did Jerusalem at 31N get snow last year?

Las Vegas is at 2,000ft in elevation, despite being in a desert.

Dry air cools off quickly after the sun goes down. Temperatures drop rapidly under clear skies. The cold front with clouds roll in early in the morning before the sun has the chance to heat it up and WHAM- You got snow!

Palm Springs might even see some snow. I might take a drive there to see that.

850mb temps this morning.

U can clearly see why snow to Vegas with Winter Storm Warnings in Arizona, NM, CA, TX & Wind Chill advisorys in the North. Pacific ridge cutting off the West and allowing a North flow with an Arctic airmass to drop down.

Looking like position of the upper low will be a tad east that where it was progged a few days ago. NWS Las Vegas is now thinking more like 0-1 inch for the city of Las Vegas now.....

From NWS Las Vegas FB page....

TUESDAY MORNING UPDATED SNOW FORECAST
As we eluded to around midnight (http://goo.gl/WYMCHy) models have shifted the brunt of the moisture and snowfall east of the Las Vegas area (remember we talked about the "bust" potential yesterday: http://goo.gl/RT1fbK). Light snow is still possible across the region but it's looking like less will fall. For Las Vegas expect snow flurries Wednesday and Wednesday Evening with little accumulation (0-1")

You're right about the elevation (which would help with colder winters). EXCEPT, Jerusalem is very humid and wet in the winter. Las Vegas is still pretty dry in winter.
