DC would be more in line with my city, Bologna, Milan would something slightly more northern, maybe NYC ?
They are not equivalent climate of D.C. in Europa because the European place wich have the same summer mean of D.C. are dryer and experience warmer winters on average.
Also they are a lot of difference between D.C. and Bologna climate, for example summer are tropical in D.C. while is not the case for Bologna.

The main differences between Bologna and DC are rainfall amounts and temperature extremes. DC is much wetter and it has continuous temperature swings, with colder lows. But in general temperatures are similar and seasons quite comparable between the two cities.
Milan is more similar to Philadelphia, but milder in each season.

What does a tropical summer mean ? There's little difference in terms of temperature (mostly lows) and relative humidity. The main difference is that DC gets twice more rain. Winters are remarkably similar.
Paris is more similar to Seattle than Vancouver. London and Amsterdam are definitely Vancouver though. Especially Amsterdam/Brussels/North Central Europe.
London has the same annual temperature as Seattle, it's notable warmer than Vancouver in every month.
I am struggling to find somewhere that matches Valletta...
Most places in southern California either have slightly higher daytimes maxes in winter or much lower nightime lows or those that match the winters have much cooler summers...

Summer dew points are lower. DC summer dew points range from 63°F to 72°F while Bologna's are 5° less. To me, a tropical summer = high dew points
Also the minimums in the summer are 4F warmer in DC
Anyone familiar with European climates can suggest an equivalent to my outlying suburb south of Chicago? I was thinking maybe the Bucharest area? Any others?

If we compare Bologna airport with Dulles airport, summer temperatures are very similar, while winters are milder in Italy. Bologna city centre averages are not far from Reagan airport, situated inside the urban area.
